5 STATES ELECTION RESULTS review by MS

Reading into the poll verdict of the recently concluded 5 State elections

(Uttar Pradesh[UP], Punjab, Uttarakhand[UK],  Manipur and Goa)

                                                                                                                               -Manoj Sandoori

                                         UTTAR PRADESH

In the fiercely contested UP elections, there's one Man due to which the Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) came back to power there after 14 years. He is none other than the present Prime Minister of our country,Mr.Narendra  Damodardas Modi.
It is due to his continuous campaigns before the elections in that state and the mass image he garnered for himself among the general public which won BJP 312 of a total of 403 seats.
If the seats of the BJP allies were also to be considered, then they have 325 seats.
What this result means is that -
  • BJP has the biggest state in the country,UP in its control. So,subsequently in the Rajya Saba where the ruling party is currently having 56 to its name out of a total of 245 seats in the Upper House.
  • This means that the BJP will gain a minimum of 8 seats in 2018 taking its tally to 64,when the Rajya Sabha elections are due in 2018 for 10 seats in UP.At present the All India National Congress(AINC) has 59 seats to its name making it the largest party in the Upper House.
  • 3) The Ordinance Rajya(Ruling with the help of Ordinances via the President) will see an end sooner as the BJP is going to have enough numbers to its name in the Rajya Sabha to push crucial reforms legislation which could have otherwise been blocked by opposition parties.
  • 4) The momentum the BJP gained here will make the General Elections due in 2019 easier for itself.
  • 5) The opposition parties need to wait further may be until 2024 elections to wait for the mistakes the NDA-II would make in order to gain control over the Centre
  •  6) As the present President,Dr.Pranab Mukherjee's 2nd term is expiring on 25th of July this year, now due to its increased strength in RajyaSabha, the BJP can look forward to elect its now candidate(probably Shri LK Advani) as the next President of India

                                     PUNJAB

Main parties in the foray- AINC,AAP(AamAadmi Party),SAD(Shiromani Akali Dal whose alliance is with the BJP)

The Congress led by Captain Amrinder Singh has won 77/117 seats to capture power in Punjab. AAP came a distant second having won only 20 seats though it is to be noted that it's their first state elections in the lovely state of Punjab.
The important points to be noted here are:

1.  Sixer Siddhu(former cricketer Navjyot Singh Siddhu) joining Congress instead of AAP before the elections was a game changer.

2.  AAP mainly focused on ousting the ruling party(SAD alliance) from power in the state. They succeeded in it but couldn't foresee the threat the Congress  would go on to force on them.

3.  This result would dent Mr.Kejriwal's hopes on expanding the AAP further from the North of India for now. Also, the Gujarat(Currently BJP held state) elections are due next year along with the states of Himachal Pradesh and Karnataka(both are presently held by the congress).

4.  So,the BJP would be quite happy with this result as opposed to what the exit polls predicted their alliance would win at most 5 seats only.

This is because the BJP's leadership sees AAP as the main threat for them instead of the Congress going into the 2019 General Elections.

UTTARAKHAND

Main parties in foray : BJP,INC

The BJP swept the UK state by winning 57 of the available 70 seats.
It is to be noted that the former Chief Minister of this state Mr.HarishRawat lost in both the constituencies he was in contention.

MANIPUR

The Iron Lady of India, Irom Chanu Sharmila who was on fasting for the past 16 years till recently against AFSPA(Armed Forces Special Protection Act) in her state, secured just 91 votes and secured 4th position while competing against the present CM Omkar Ibobi Singh.
The election result in the state is as follows:

Although the Congress emerged the single largest party, the BJP is all set to form the Govt due to its extensive lobbying and finally attracting the Independent candidates.

GOA

Here too,the INC emerged the single largest party.
As of now,it's emerged that the BJP will form theGovt here too with Mr.Manohar Parrikar(former   Defence Minister of India) all set to be sworn as the new CM of Goa.https://ssl.gstatic.com/ui/v1/icons/mail/images/cleardot.gif
